Stillness in Motion presents a new chapter in the ongoing artistic dialogue between Alonzo Adams and his son, Kyle Olani Adams. Though the two have shared stages, exhibitions, and audiences for years, this capsule marks a moment where their distinct voices come together in a concentrated, thematic form. Rather than working side-by-side, they are now shaping a unified narrative and expanding upon their shared legacy.
Across their broad practices, each artist has developed certain resonant strengths. Alonzo often brings an unmatched tenderness and clarity to depictions of youth, capturing their beginnings, curiosities, and unspoken possibilities. Kyle, in turn, has become known for his contemplative portrayals of elderhood - the dignity, memory, and essence of those who carry experience.
In this capsule, those strengths meet in conversation across a four-part cycle:
Becoming, Learning, Ritual, and Reflection.
The result is a meditation on Black life across time — the innocence of early years, the imaginative leaps of youth, the discipline and wisdom gained through routine, and the quiet resilience of age.
This exhibition does not marks an evolution of their shared history — a new way for father and son to build a narrative together, shaped by time, perspective, and mutual legacy.

Alonzo Adams, one of the leading figurative artists of his generation, is renowned for his emotionally rich portrayals of Black life-images that speak to love, resilience, dignity, and the everyday beauty found in community. His work reflects a commitment to truth and storytelling that has shaped contemporary African-American art for over three decades.
His son, Kyle Adams, brings a modern, expressive voice shaped by today's cultural moment. His dynamic charcoal work, reimagined forms, and innovative textures push the family's creative conversation into new territory-asserting that legacy is not static but evolving, expanding, and redefining itself with each new generation.
